Tea does not deteriorate or expire in the sense that it is no longer safe to consume; rather, the fresher the tea, the greater the health benefits and the better the taste. Tea can become bad if it is exposed to moisture and heat in rare situations. If you’re not sure if your tea is still good, it’s advisable to replace it with new tea and enjoy a fresh delicious cup.
We recommend preserving it from heat, light, air, other spices and moisture as much as possible to keep it as fresh as possible.
Bad Tea? Here’s How to Tell
Do you have any doubts about the freshness of your tea? Teas that you suspect are over a year old should be smelled and tasted, and if necessary, replaced with new tea.
Fresh tea should have a lovely aroma and brew into a bright, tasty cup. When tea leaves are subjected to heat or light, they can darken or change color. If the color of your tea has changed since you initially bought it, it’s time to start again with fresh tea.
Most aged teas are boring or stale, and have less flavor than they should. While it isn’t always dangerous to drink old tea, it isn’t the best way to enjoy a cup of tea. Don’t consume your tea if it smells or tastes stale, or if visible mold or other signs of decomposition are obvious. In general, we recommend using caution and avoiding any teas that appear to be past their prime.
